2008 Open, Oaklands Lake, New Ross- 31 August 2008
Match report After a summer of rain the clouds moved away in time for the Portobello Open at the end of August. 39 anglers turned up on the day for what promised to be a close, hard-fought match. Although the carp failed to show in any numbers competition was tight for sections and the top three anglers were separated by little more than 1 kilo. Most fish were taken on long pole fished direct to a hook baited with pellet, corn or worm.
Carlow's Martin Rush made the most of a good draw in the corner beside the inlet to secure top spot - €350 and his name alongside Pat Bartley and Paul McBride on the club's perpetual trophy. Ken Ince and Wesley Slevin ran him close to collect €200 and €150 respectively. Sponsors, Henley Group, had generously donated a dozen spot prizes of jackets, hats and laptop bags so alongside 4 section winners there were plenty of smiling faces at the end of the day. Special thanks to the staff at Oaklands for hosting the event on such an immaculate venue.
